Performing Arts

At St Francis Xavier Primary School our Performing Arts program offers a dynamic and engaging experience across Music, Dance, and Drama with an emphasis on practical skill development and creativity.

Music – Throughout their learning journey at St Francis Xavier, children develop musical literacy skills to read and write music notation, and learn how to compose their own works. Through regular engagement in percussion and movement activities children develop foundational skills in beat, rhythm and time. Children engage with a range of instruments including keyboard, guitar, ukulele and xylophones and explore ways to use technology to record and create musical works.

Dance – Across all year levels our dance units foster creativity, physical development and collaboration. Whilst in the junior years our dance units focus on aligning both music/song with movement, middle and senior years explore movement styles grounded in hip-hop and body percussion. Across all year levels children are explicitly taught movement sequences, and equally, have the opportunity to apply their knowledge through choreographing works.

Drama – Within our units of drama, children explore character, improvisation, story development and scripted drama. Students learn to manipulate their voice, gesture and movement to create characters and work collaboratively to convey stories. Whilst in both junior and middle years children explore improvisation and mime, within senior years children expand their drama skills through the incorporation of multimedia and refinement of comedy
