Science and Environmental Education

Science and Environmental Education

At St Francis Xavier Primary School, we take a holistic approach to Science and Environmental Education. This program integrates the Victorian Science Curriculum and is delivered through the Inquisitive program, offering students rich opportunities to explore the world around them through hands-on learning, critical thinking, and investigation.

Our focus on environmental sustainability remains central. We aim to reduce our ecological footprint while improving the liveability of our world. Through fortnightly Science and Environmental Education lessons, students learn to think sustainably, reduce waste, and care for the natural world. These important ideas are further explored and reinforced in classroom learning.

Our school community actively supports sustainable practices, including wrapper-free lunches, recycling initiatives, the use of reclaimed materials, revegetation of our unique wetlands, and the growing of organic produce in our school garden. These authentic experiences equip students with the knowledge, skills and values to take meaningful action at home, in the community, and beyond.

Since the program’s beginning in 2006, we have seen ongoing success and engagement thanks to the commitment of students and staff. We hope that our continued efforts not only foster lifelong habits in our students, but also inspire a shared responsibility for the environment within our wider school community.
